Creative Sydney Session 1 // Collaborative Consumption

What's Mine Is Yours | The Rise of Collaborative Consumption

Session by Rachel Botsman

In 1985 the web was a mess and we couldn't imagine how the web has transformed our lives.

Rachel believes that we are at the beginning of a shift in the way we consume - collaborative consumption.

What is collaborative consumption? An example is Go Get www.goget.com.au which is a car sharing business service. Technology removes the negative stigmas and hassles associated with collaborative consumption.

This idea is based on our relationship with the expeiences it fulfills, not the 'stuff'. We and the world around us is wires to share says Rachel and I agree - I've been sharing my Creative Sydney experiences so far. Sharing, swapping, renting, bargaining = collaborative consumption. Collaborative lifestyle includes Social Lending, social co-working, landshare. Rentoid, a P2P rental service, was mentioned as an example that allows resources being shared and transforming us from being passive consumers. Another example which I am surprised that Rachel has not mentioned is Creative Commons http://www.creativecommons.org.au

The Digital Natives or the Millenials have grown up to share, collaborate and cooperate. Generation Me to Generation We. We are feeding our social self via tweeting, blogging, discussion forums, photo uploading and status updates.

now that we can do anything, why can we do? What is our role in the way consumer decisions are made? The creative industries can take ideas from the what-if to the actual.

How are you sharing?
