Queensland Festival of Photography // {Highlight} {Exhibitions}

From the Queensland Festival of Photography site.

For an excellent overview of current Queensland Contemporary Photography and where it is headed I would suggest the exhibition Brave New World which opens Saturday 3rd of April at the Queensland Centre for Photography.  What is interesting about this show is the focus on photography as a medium for fiction.  The old adage that 'the camera never lies' today is no longer valid and these twenty contemporary artists explore photography as 'a medium for proposals'.  The Queensland Centre for Photography is the key driving force behind the festival and in ensuring that Queensland photographic artists gain recognition both in Australia and abroad so this seems the most appropriate place to begin the exploration of all things photo-media.

For an even broader view of the diversity of photo-media artists in Queenslands head up to the Redcliffe Regional Gallery to see Synchronicity: Contemporary Queensland Photography.  This is the touring exhibition organised from the Darryl Hewson and QCP collections and features over fifty Queensland artists.  It opened on March 31st and runs until 24th April.  There will be free artist talks on the 14th, 17th and 21st of April. Details can be found here.

Another key event in the Festival is the Symposium held at the UQ Art Museum on Saturday 10th April.  Photo-media artists in various stages of their career will be discussing the ideas behind their work.  At 2pm there will be a panel discussion titled 'Everyone's a Photographer Now...'.  In a time where everyone has access to a camera whether it be a digital SLR or a 2 mega pixiel camera phone the aim of the panel is to "consider future challenges and suggest new models for artistic practice, critical discourse, curatorship and audience engagement."

While you are there check out the exhibition The state we’re in: Contemporary Queensland Photography. It features twelve of Queenslands most well known photo-media artists and runs until April 11th.

If you want to get involved and are an old school film enthusiast the Viewfinder event by Nine Lives Gallery may be of interest to you.  Viewfinder is an exhibition of film based works no larger than 6x4 inches and they are currently calling for submissions. Works must be film based so this will appeal to all those Polaroid-processing, Holga-loving, 35mm SLR-snapping, pinhole-poking fanatics out there.  Submissions are due 12th April and the exhibition runs from 16th April - 23rd April.  If you're a collector not a snapper (or, like me, are both) you will be interested to know that all the works are for sale and if last year was anything to go by all works are very well priced.  Find out more here.

Other exhibitions high on the priority list are:

This celebration of photo-media is the biggest in Australia and is evidence of Queensland's wealth of artistic and curatorial talent and dedication to pushing the boundaries of the photographic medium.  The exhibitions I have listed here really are just the tip of the ice-berg so be sure to have a look at the rest of the

program.
